Thank you for your support in 2020
With Christmas just a few days away, we want to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy and prosperous 2021 – from the whole team here at AD4PT. Thank you so much for your interest and support in 2020, we very much look forward to sharing more of our adapt thinking and initiatives with you in 2021. The field trials at Flawborough Farms are coming on well and we’ll be sharing more on that with you in the New Year. In the mean time, here’s some of our latest AD4PT thinking and some festive fun with great goodies and a schoffel fleece gilet to be won. Good luck!
AD4PT 2021 Thinking
High value spring oilseed rape should not be missed
With the price of oilseed rape surging to a multi-year high in recent weeks and prospects looking strong for next year, spring-sown oilseed rape could deliver real benefits for growers in 2021, says ADM Agriculture’s Head of Seed James Barlow.
New generation varieties able to deliver their full potential in the shorter growing window combined with greater understanding of the crop’s management, means spring sown oilseed now provides the best opportunity for growers in its history, aided mainly by the hybridisation of the crop in the past decade, he says
“Around two thirds of OSR grown across the world is spring sown, so whilst it’s historically been a niche crop in the UK, this isn’t the case at a global level.
“Recent price gains have underpinned the production economics of the crop, but it also adds another vital spring crop into the rotation and be a useful tool in blackgrass management where this is a problem.
“Sowing is a critical area and should be carried out in the best conditions possible to ensure rapid and even emergence. It is always better to wait for optimum seedbed conditions rather than sowing early.”

DSV Maize Trial 2020
This year DSV commissioned a three site yield trial in the UK for screening and demo purposes. The trials were conducted alongside official trials in Wiltshire, Norfolk and Cheshire. Harvest started in mid September and was finished by mid October in Cheshire, where DSV saw the highest yield with an average DM yield of nearly 17t per ha and a top yield of over 19t/ha. The average at the other 2 sites was somewhat lower at nearly 15 t per ha with the top yield over 16t.
Multi-site inhibitors vital to future-proofing cereal disease control
With disease resistance continuing to erode the protectant activity of single site fungicides, cereal growers must use a diversity of active ingredients – including a multi-site – to ensure programmes offer effective long-term protection.
That’s the latest advice from ADAMA’s Fungicides Technical Specialist, Andy Bailey, who states that Arizona (500g/l folpet) will be crucial next spring, not only to provide adequate disease control, but also to protect and prolong the efficacy of single site fungicides.
“The key to effective disease control is to keep ahead of the game by ensuring adequate protectant is achieved,” Andy explains. “The timing of applications is therefore critical, as is the array, rate and frequency at which active ingredients are applied.”
Strengthen cereal disease control with Kantor
With increasing disease resistance putting pressure on the performance of single site fungicide actives, multi-site fungicide Arizona (500 g/l) folpet + adjuvant Kantor will be two vital additions to disease control programmes next spring in order to protect crops and chemistry.
That’s the latest recommendation from Stuart Sutherland, technical manager at Nichino UK who states that with the loss of chlorothalonil, fungicide programmes in 2021 will need to be even more robust to ensure the long term protection of single site fungicides. Multi-site fungicide folpet will be a crucial resistance management tool also adding improved disease control, whilst the addition of adjuvant Kantor T0-T3 offers the best and simplest approach to help optimise fungicide placement and uptake, which are all too often compromised by challenging application conditions in the spring.
New precision metering systems for new HORSCH Maestro
HORSCH has launched a new AirSpeed overpressure metering system for the 2021 Maestro to complement the AirVac vacuum metering system it unveiled at Agritechnica last year.
HORSCH announced its new generation of Maestro precision drills with the launch of the Maestro CV and RV at Agritechnica’19 which feature the AirVac system. The new AirSpeed system gives farmers a choice of metering technologies that allows the machine to be perfectly and individually adapted to the requirements of the farm.
The updates increase the Maestro range to five models (CV and CX, SV and SX, RV) with 6 to 36 rows making it the largest range of precision single-seed drills on the UK market. In addition to the new metering systems, features such as a new clamping profile for easy row adjustment make the new Maestro even more effective.
